How To Treat Sciatic Nerve Pain

A woman should be aware of the discomfort that entails pregnancy and be able to know the proper way of dealing with these minor discomforts.  One of the minor discomforts of pregnancy is sciatic nerve pain.

During pregnancy, the sciatic nerve is situated beneath the uterus and as the fetus starts to develop, the uterus puts pressure on this longest nerve.  When this happens, a sharp pain is felt starting from the buttocks or lower back extending to the heel, giving a sudden agony.  Some experience pain of sciatic nerve pregnancy earlier but some during the latter stage.  This pain can last for weeks or months.  The common symptoms involve numbness on the affected area like the leg or the feet, lower back pain, and burning or shooting sensation.  

The pain of sciatic nerve pregnancy can be relieved by some recommended treatments.  Application of cold and hot pad on the area of this nerve pain can offer relief.  Soaking in a tub with warm water will also help ease the pain.  Avoiding some activities like lifting heavy objects and straining body posture like standing for longer period of time will prevent experiencing this discomfort.  Lying on the opposite of the painful side has also been attested to be effective as it reduces nerve pressure.  Anti-inflammatory medication that is non-steroidal, which is proven to be safe like Tylenol can also be taken to reduce the discomfort felt.  Visiting a physiotherapist or physical therapist can provide helpful exercises that will strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor, abdomen, and the back.  Massage therapy has also gained a lot of positive feedback in its efficiency in alleviating the sciatic nerve pain for it soothes nerve tension allowing the muscle relaxation.  Having strong muscles will not only be beneficial in relieving or preventing pain associated with sciatic nerve pregnancy but will also be helpful during labor and delivery of the baby. 

A woman experiencing this type of nerve pain during pregnancy should consult a physician first before deciding to try any treatment.  The physician will be the one to recommend the most effective treatment with no harmful effects to both the mother and baby.  Safety of the baby should always be taken into consideration when considering to undergo a treatment.
